Toni' Dad

A portrait of Toni's Dad. 20"x16" oil on canvas. Sweet man with a ruddy complexion that turned out to be a loving responsible father. I have been told that this portrait captured his spirit. NFS

Running Barrels

I revised the sketch which is in an earlier post. This painting will be in the Louisville 33rd Annual National Juried Art show in September 2018. It was one of only 100 pieces of the 400+ entries. The show includes photography and sculpture.

I am enjoying the cowboy theme series and will post a few more paintings soon!

Twisted Bull

This is one of the last pictures in my series on Western scenes. This is a large oil on canvas, say 30"x40" or so. I picture the bull as whipping his head up and down and around while bucking the poor rider off!

I used a fan brush (ugh!) on this painting in a few select areas. I know that the fan brush gets a lot of bad rep but it was a wonderful discovery for me! I will never hesitate to use it again. Time flies while painting--indeed--I get exhausted in the concentration required and must take a break after about an hour or so. Actually, this is a good thing since I need to step away, look away and come back only to see all of the mistakes that must be fixed! Yes, painting is all about correcting mistakes and for me there are plenty.

One of the tidbits of wisdom that I picked up from an instructor who was repeating what they heard from another is to figure out what the painting needs most and work on that. I believe that this is a good way to prioritize the painting process since one sees so many mistakes during the process. Eventually, the painting is done!

Cooking Eggs

 A large oil on canvas painting (24"x 48") of a cook scrambling some eggs.

Indian Coal Carriers

A 16" x 20" oil on canvas painting of Indian women carrying coal from the coal mine.  The colors and composition attracted me to this painting.

Calf Roper Dismount

A large oil on canvas painting of a dismounting calf roper done in an expressionistic style.  I like to paint in a loose style especially when action is depicted.  34"x 44".

Honey Crisp and Spatula

I enjoyed studying the white fabric which looks especially realistic against the dark background.  In person, the fabric looks like it jumps off the canvas.  The apple was fun and painting fruits and vegetables is always a challenge and is satisfying. I think people are drawn to this little painting due to its unusual composition.

Pear and Apple

Small oil on board painting (6"x8") of fruit on handkerchief.  Good practice on handling paint when not painting other subjects!

Calf Roper

A 20"x16" oil on canvas painting of a calf roper.  Cowboys and the American West!  So iconic!

Busker

An 8"x12" oil on canvas of a young, Hispanic busker and his dog on a blue painted tile sidewalk playing an accordion. 

Bronco Rider

A large oil on canvas painting of an unlucky bronco rider! This painting is 26"x48" canvas mounted on wood panel.

Girls in Creek at Crested Butte

Mother and daughters in a tiny creek looking at....?  This is tiny, plein air painting, 4"x6" oil on canvas panel. Had to capture the moment and the light.

I love Crested Butte!

Bull Rider

A large, oil on canvas painting (30" x 46").  This is part of a western and rodeo series of paintings.

A 16"x12" oil on canvas of the cutest wiggle butt--miniature long-hair dachshund.

Spring Gulch Equestrian Area

A small plein air oil on board looking down onto a gulch that is used for equestrian riding. This is sandy creek bottom complete with horse jumps, fences and a dressage area.  Love to watch the contests in the summer!

Barrel Rider Sketch

I like the energy of this picture.  The horse is trained and obedient while the rider is in control.  This sketch will probably change into a more refined painting later.

Bear Creek Path in Summer

This is a plein oil painting of the Bear Creek path done in full summer. Just a wonderful place to relax, fish for wild trout and paint.

"Cottonwoods in Open Field" near Crested Butte, Colorado.  This painting was exhibited in the Ode to Joy Gallery in Crested Butte Plein Air Open.  9"x12" oil on board.
